Screen on laptop went black 1" on left-side; vertical.

I have a HP Pavilion zd8000 17" screen, the laptop is about 3 1/2 years old. Recently the screen on the left-side went black, it started running vertical color-lines, then it went totaly black. When I contect to an external monitor the screen is fine. I have re-installed the softwear, the problem still exsist. H.P. offer to repair the screen for $387, other local shops wants $350. Any ideals?
