Dell Inspiron 6000 Fan Issue?

Hello everyone. I purchased my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop in December of 2005. I have had no problems with the laptop in all this time. Two weeks ago I started to hear an usual sound as I was surfing the net on the laptop. It appeared to be coming from the back left hand corner of the computer. I flipped the computer upside slightly and noticed a lot of air coming out of the computer. I assumed the fan was the issue. I had no idea what to do, so I shut the computer down, and the noise stopped a minute after shutdown. I had the same problem a few days later. And then last night, once again, the loud sound. This time I didn't shut the computer down, and the sound went away after 5 minutes.

Should I attempt to purchase and install a new fan? Is this a simple procedure? Is there any test I could run on my laptop to make sure this is the issue, or something else?

Bob, thanks for this. I've never cleaned the insides of my laptop. Do you think that's what's causing the fan to make all the noise? I'll try to clean it and report back if any further noise comes up.

The laptop had vacuumed up a small scrap of paper into the fan and was driving it's owner insane. In machine speak it was repeating "clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, clean me, ...)
