hp laptop display - power but no image

My machine is having the same issue as rohan.katipally posted about recently. The hard drive seems to boot up fine, the screen gets power, but no images appear on the screen. Unfortunately the 3-year warranty just expired about 2 months ago. Does anyone have an idea of which chip or connection is having issues? I am hoping to have some idea of what is wrong *before* taking it to a shop for diagnosis.

FWIW I'm running xp pro, and about 3 months ago a similar problem occurred: display would alternate between powered-but-blank, and this screen (http://www.thewolfweb.com/photos/00486927.jpg). The monkeys at HP support reinstalled the OS but I don't think they repaired any hardware. Thanks in advance.

Sorry. What make, model number, etc?

I see HP but which? As it stands it looks like a failure we correct by replacing the motherboard. But without a model number I can't check to see if it's something noted with any specific model.
