Does Gateway tell you how to route sound to HDMI?

It's far from automatic and in most cases you'll see video over HDMI and the sound is via the PC's sound card.

Some of the media players will only pipe through the pc sound system. Are you seeing our words in red?

I can't answer your last question. Either I don't know or I can't know since your posts are "light." I noted it could be a media player setting but you don't share which you use. Since you can't see our words in red, here's the copy and please report in FORUM FEEDBACK that they don't show for you.

Well, that's not obvious. Remember I didn't check with Gateway.com for such an article.

Down at the bottom of your screen right click on the volume icon click on playback devices this will open a secondary window. You should now see your Laptop Speaker as well as the HDMI port. Right click on the Laptop sound in the Playback Tab and disable. You will need to reenable this once you are done using your HDMI output. Then you will most likely need to restart the program that you would like to receive audio from. This will now utilize the HDMI cable as it is the only option currently available. Hopefully this will work for you, there may need to be a variation of this fix which is based on Microsoft Vista using a Vaio Laptop.

I'm going to write that while I've fixed this on dozens of laptops the menus and settings must be in some dozens of different places.

It's a shame it wasn't easier. But if your software player is good (7 Starter Edition is just so bad we can't write another word about it) then you fish around for the place to pipe the sound over HDMI.

Sorry I missed it if you jumped into JB2012's discussion. The make and models matter but I apologize I missed the new member jumping into a prior discussion.

If the audio drops out it could be another issue I run into. To test this is NOT FUN FOR SOME. Fun for me as I try it on another HDMI HDTV set. Here it is. Ready?

HDMI is a minefield of HDCP (google that!) "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection" which is just sad to say does not work all the time. In fact I think they are proud at how it works and you see stories like yours and then my successes by changing to component cable, DVI, and other sets.

I'm lucky that I've seen this too many times and don't have to deal with customer issues like this. Those that sold this stuff deserve all the ire.
