I have a HP Pavilion dv9205us lap top(product # RP115UA#ABA) with 2g memory, 120g HD, 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core processor. I have tried to connect USB external HD (2 different brands-Maxtor 320, Iomega 160) with no luck. At first it recognized the drive then asked for disc or to search for drivers, I have done it both ways(searching in windows files and online with no luck, then is says driver installation failed. Both drives are NTFS. I have tried them (separately) in all usb ports. The ports work for all other uses, it just doesn't work for mass storage devices. I have posted this several places with no luck, the moderator for Iomega board offered one solution, but it didn't work...someone mentioned the bios as the problem, I have also found out this seems to be a pretty common problem, yet no solution.. I have contacted(message through web site- got conformation - that's all) HP also with no luck

the laptop is as purchased, with the exception of the added memory. I did notice when I loaded some programs Vista said it would run in XP mode, and some said . The party for release of Vista was on 1-29-07, it was released the next day and I bought this on 2-6-07, so I did kinda of expect some problems due to newness of the system, but I have conquered all of them with the exception of set of drivers for HP Laserjet 1012, and this mass storage device problem. Other than a few compatibility problems I really like vista (once I got used to it. Right now I am debating if I should change to XP just because of the USB MSD problem. Also not sure if it is running in 64b of 32b mode

XP-64 or Vista Ultimate in 64-bit mode. I'm going to stop here on that.

As to the USB drives, what if they are partitioned and formatted in Vista?

but did you try this sequence?

1. Power up laptop and login
2. Plug in USB ext. HD before powering it on
3. Power on the ext. HD (if you are using 2.5" drives, they may need separate power supply because some laptop USB ports can't supply enough current)
4. Wait for PnP to detect new HD until it says OK or sometimes may need to reboot
5. Check Device Manager to see if installation succeeded
6. Assign a drive letter using Disk Management, if necessary

Downgrading to XP is not advisable for laptops configured for Vista, although you can certainly try. Drivers may be hard or impossible to find or incompatible if found.

I have done that numerous times, at this point it doesn't even show new hardware down by the clock, just a beep then a beep disconnecting, nothing shows up in drive listings, or device manager.
I did hear they had a recall for this model but not for the problem I am having.
At the Iomega forum I was told
"Vista seems to tend to loose the files USBSTOR.INF and USBSTOR.PNF from C:\Windows\INF. Probably there are more files missing then but the USBSTOR files are most frequently used ones.
There are copies of the files in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository - just copy them to C:\Windows\INF

I tried that and it didn't work either

Then it's a warranty issue.

If you have some drive that is noted to work on Vista then doesn't, you take it as a warranty issue. There is little else to do for most consumers.
