Dell seems to be playing games with laptops

I am looking to purchase a new laptop after a 4 year hiatus from laptops and was shocked by Dell's website.
It is like a con game. They have restricted the options on all their different laptops to force you to buy an inadequate laptop (in terms of graphic cards etc.) or a hideously expensive one.
The first laptop you can find with a GeForce 7900 GS is over $2000!!
A year ago, before their obvious decision to play games with the consumer and take advantage of a lot of people's lack of tech-education, I could configure a laptop that put their vaunted XPS systems to shame for half the cost.
I have always been pleased with Dell's service/warranties but, unless people set me straight here (and I mean that... there are many of you far more educated on these issues than I) on why Dell is okay, I will have to look elsewhere.
On that note, what would people recommend for a laptop on which I hope to do some medium level gaming for around $2000.
