Miscellaneous laptop discussions forum: New laptop- Dell vs. HP

lately, ive been looking at the Inspiron 1420 and the HP dv2500t. I will be using it for work mostly (im still a student) with a bit of gaming on the side. Both the inspiron and Hp are even when it comes to hardware but id still like to look at other systems before i actually buy anything.

for the open office tip. my only concern is that i wont be able to open and read word or excel documents

I found that HP is currently offering free shipping and would ship a few days sooner than Dell. I was in a hurry so I'm going for our 2nd for HP Laptop. Tech support last year was not great - (apparently the email and phones guys can't talk with each other) but all ended well.

In my budget range ($1000) I compared a Dell Inspiron 1520 and a HP Dv6500 - they are very similar, the Dell was 25 bucks cheaper - however the HP had better vid card and slightly newer processor.

the Inspiron 1420 and the dv6500t are evenly matched. both come to a total of about $1500 - $1550. the dv2500t was $1600 but there were less features. at the moment dell is offering a free 2 GB upgrade, a faster hard drive and of cource the "award winning" Dell customer service. They really go over the top with Dell Data Safe and Dell PC Tune up. It also has a "wi-fi catcher, and hyperband multi-antenna. the dv6500t is a bit bigger and heavier than the dell, by a lb. or so. It has the light scribe DVDRW drive and gives some pretty nice discounts on their hardware.
