Miscellaneous laptop discussions forum: Why are laptops so expensive versus desktops?

I've had fun using my very own first laptop, but now it's really getting old and needs an upgrade.

I'm trying to make a list of pros and cons on whether I should invest in another laptop or a desktop.

But, I say to myself: "why?"

Why is there a price difference?

1) Is it because they have to make the parts portable? On a side note, are the parts used in laptops low-powered as opposed to parts in desktops? They can't put a real Core Duo chip in a laptop as it consumes a lot of power, so they put in a more energy efficient chip which isn't as powerful. Is that correct?

Why does a desktop seem like a "sturdier" choice?

2) Because, it is stationary and away from you? I know my laptop feels flimsy the fan is wearing down, and the internal HD is crappin' out fast.

I recently used a Toshiba Satellite laptop and it feels surprisingly solid as well as the Mac Books etc..

..but, I feel that I need a good sturdy desktop so I can maybe upgrade it in the future too.

What do you guys think?
