how to fix laptop keyboard?

this is part 2 of the laptop problem, since the cooling fan was not working properly, so i used a damp tissue paper to wipe off the keyboard once in a while.
now one of the key is not working any more, the . key! the most important one for internet surfing, haha
anyway, i have taken out the keyboard before, it seems simple, i was also able to take out that key cover before.
from my memory, there seems to be a black iron sort of thing covering the entire bottom of the keyboard, is there anything covered by it?
or can i just take out the plastic key cover for that . key, and do some cleaning from there?
one time, i actually picked out someone's coffee spilled keyboard from a garbage can, and i went home, cleaned out the coffee stain, it worked perfectly fine, so i am confident that i can fix this one, too.
