Battery icon on taskbar disappeared

I have a Compaq Presario M2000 laptop with XP Home SP 2. A couple of days ago my computer downloaded some updates and now the battery icon on the taskbar is gone. I went to Start, Control Panel, Power Options, Advanced, Always show icon on taskbar, it was checked, I unchecked, went back in and checked, it still is missing. I Googled the question and read somewhere to download Tune-up utilities 2006, do refresh icon cache and fix icon cache, but couldn't find where to do the refresh icon cache. I'm open to any suggestions-thanks

Desktop Properties

right click on your desktop
select properties
Select "Screen Saver" tab
click on the "Power" button
Select "Advanced" tab
Check the "Always show icon..." box.
Apply

That should do it.

You may have to right click on your Taskbar
Select "Properties"
Click on the "Customize" button in the Notification area
Click on the power item in the list
Select the option you want from the drop down

It was already checked. And I tried unchecking it, apply, and went back in and rechecked it, and it didn't help.
