Lost personal settings on notebook

Hi,
I bought a new Viao laptop last summer.
After working just fine, for months suddenly one day it announced at boot-up that it could not load my personal settings and has been on the standard Viao
default user settings ever since.

Since I took a lot of trouble to set things up the way I want them this is a bit of a pain.
Can anyone advise of how
1) I can get my settings back
2) How I can stop it hapen again
3) Once I have the settings in place can I save them on a pendrive for instance so I can restore them easily if it happens again especially when I am travelling?

safe mode

Try starting it up in safe mode, then do a full system scan, can you remember what the last thing you did with it before it did this, if you can it would probally need undoing as that would be the problem.
