Miscellaneous laptop discussions forum: HP zt3000

I bought HP's zt300o in mid Jan. I really enjoy it over my old Dell Inspiron 8100. I have had a few major problems. My scroll pad is not working and I need to send it back to get fixed. This is not a major problem, since I use a mouse, but I do not know what to do when I go mobile with the computer. Once I started to upgrade the software on the computer I had to re-install everything which is just fine since it runs a lot faster now. I would go for it. There are bigger and better things out there, but this is just right for me. If you can find a laptop that has the various screen resolutions I would check out and see which one is best for you. I have the 1900 x 1200 resolution. It took a week for me to get used to the higher resolution. Finally check out the website: www.x1000forums.com you will be able to find other opinions on the laptop.

You can lower the resolution, but it is not as clear as an authentic 1680 x 1050.

1. Frankly, the issue of reliability is one worth discussing. For most, if not all machines you get from HP, Dell and such, you connect them to the internet and within minutes a worm will invade the system. Why we are accepting such machines is starting to annoy many.

To expect a new owner to download and patch the new machine OS and deal with this is simply taking "reliable" and tossing it out.

2. The units don't survive a fall off the common desktop to the floor.

Again, the vendors are not beefing up the units to last very long.

The unit is not "reliable."

3. With some care and coddling, the units might last 2 to some years. But the supplied battery degrades in about year 2 and needs replacement soon. Figure 18 months per battery.

I should have done more homework. HP used to have a pretty good name in the industry, now it's pretty much S**T.

My ' HighEnd" DV7 Quad has loose USB slots, the crappiest BIOS I have ever seen - WAY too much bloatware, including HP's applications that slow even an i7 down. And try upgrading, that is a nightmare with support you can't imagine until you've been through it.

Find a different company, I never liked Dell - but at least support EVENTUALLy USUALLY comes to some kind of resolution. HP is full of it, I got 4 different 'causes' for an error message trying to load the OS onto an SSD. One resolution was 'you cant' use a secondary' oh please !! My resolution: sell the damn thing on Craigslist and buy a Sager.
