How can I uninstall or get rid of avast protection?

I downloaded the software for avast antivirus protection yesterday. My computer is freezing before I can do anything with it. I click uninstall and it goes to creating system restore point. I have been trying since yesterday to get through, but it doesn't go any further. The hour glass is still going, but I can't click on anything. I can't even click esc and get out of it. It has been on this spot with the hour glass running for 3 hours now. (I'm using my son's computer now) Please help!!!!

If you need to stop this process, try opening the Task Manager, (right click the Taskbar, select Task Manager), and end the application in the Applications tab, or end the process in the Processes tab.

if you cannot access the Task Manager, your only option is to Shut Down the computer from the Start menu. If that fails, press and hold down the "Power on" button for a few seconds until the system shuts down. Wait a few seconds, then restart it.

Thanks, this helped. It took a while due to all the freeze-ups, but I finally got rid of Avast. I had trend micro before and was very happy with it. I just thought I'd try a free one.....never again. I'm back with trend micro and very happy. Thanks again for the advice. It really helped.

An that's why you had a problem with avast!. Before installing a new AV, it is imperative that you totally remove all remnants of the old one.
Unless you use the removal tool offered by Trend Micro, much of the program remains when only using the uninstall function. These remains always come back to haunt you after installing a new AV as you found out.
You used the removal tool offered by avast! which is why you are now not experiencing any problems.
Should you ever want to try avast! again, remember the rule to totally remove the AV currently installed, rebooting and then installing avast!
