Avast forum: Avast vs AVG & Norton

I started using Avast when Norton became bloatware about 5 years ago. I've since tried a couple of other products but keep coming back to Avast as it has NEVER caused a problem on any PC where I've installed it. Great product, I run the free version but really should pay for it!

my friend brought me his old acer travelmate c300 with a centrino 1.6 cpu and 512 mb of ram so i might try this anti virus out to see how light it is on system resources..... anyone running older computers with win xp pro and limited ram .... if so how fast does it run?

yeah it has been a while since i tried avast and will try it out tonight!

jc69; Avast is light on resources & along with my 1st post,I failed 2 mention it is great in the boot scan mode,it takes less than 30 mins. 2 scan my entire PC, which has over 300 gigs of files on c&d drives + I have it set 2 open all archives.I simply start my unit 30 mins before I need it. travis41

I've used Norton, McAfee, F-Secure, AVG, MSE, Comodo - none of them come close to Avast!. Everything else lets the bugs in and then tries to kill them. Not Avast! It prevents them from getting in, in the first place. And, it's extremely light on resources. I love it. I even use it with only the Windows firewall and feel confident. I've installed it on numerous people's computers and recommend it to everyone. Thanks Avast!

I think bit fender is the wrong answer, the correct software (shareware) answer is norton 360.

I have my Sony laptop running Windows 7 64-bit which deals with work related information and I also use it for purchasing from the Internet. It is a very secure system. It runs avast Internet security paid for version.


Then I have my desktop which is running Windows 7 64-bit ultimate pirate version very unsafe operating system which has seen far too many unsafe programs running on it. I monitor outgoing traffic and incoming traffic because I believe it is an unsafe system.

I've run this system for over a year with no problems. The computer suddenly started taking longer to load. Something was going on. I decided to put my paid for version of avast Internet security 111109-1 09/11/2011. Turn the options all the way up PUP everything on high. Run a scan and nothing showed up. Decided to run a Boots can. Rebooted the computer and hey presto! Avast had been turned off firewall had been turned off also. I turned them all back on again and downloaded Malwarebytes and run a scan and nothing..

Rebooted the computer and avast had been turned off again.

I downloaded Hitman Pro 3.5 and it found "Dropper Trojan" in the direction of "C:\Program Files (x86)\MAGIX\Movie_Edit_Pro_15\".

Mistaken identity? As it is a unsafe operating system I wasn't that concerned and selected delete.

My computer is now functioning as normal it has speeded up again and avast doesn't turn off by itself any more.

Is this not an old virus "Dropper Trojan".

Click Maintenence-click settings{top right} - select troubleshooting from menu - check Avast self-Defense Module,this should cure any Avast shut downs,Good luck & safe surfing;Travis

I am a great-grandmother and a newbie ,does Avast check email as well?I have been trying to un-install AVG and it is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE so any help in this area will also be very appreciated...Thank you so much for your help and a speedy reply...

Unhappy to see you go from AVG, but in case of any issues with common AVG uninstallation, please follow these instructions to remove it manually.

Nowadays, more than half people in the forum says freeware antivurus software is good.

Actually, one of my family member says that Avast is not good, lots of people says MSE is good, but he said the good antivirus software is Norton. This is my process using antivirus software: (the softwares are slowly improved)

Avast => AVG => Mcafee => Norton Antivirus => Norton 360

The N360 is the better antivirus than other but to use N360 first you must purchase the Norton 360 product key.

So, the answer for any software will be Norton 360. The answer for freeware only will be Microsoft Security Essentials.
