How do I fix: "operating system not found" on a Sony Vaio

I have an older Sony Vaio Laptop, model VGN-NR280E,that was loaded with the Vista operating system. Somehow I managed to delete everything I believe including the OS. I have tried using the two recovery discs, but they don't seem to work. When I go to the bios, I can't seem to get past that page. Maybe the Hard drive is gone. I attempted to completely restore the system when this happened. I don't have a backup disc. Any suggestions on how I should proceed? Please help me if you have been able to solve a similar problem.

And hard drives do fail. Be sure to test that first and install a new drive before you lose too much time.
