Can another adapter be used besides Sony's for wifi on tv?

I now have a WIFI cable modem on my computer. I want to use it with my Sony 55HX800 wifi ready tv. Was told by cable technician that I also needed an adapter on the tv so I can use my internet , my Wii online and stream Netflix to the tv. Sony's adapter does not get great reviews. Will a different brand work? If so, which one?

To use the USB adapter I'd get the Sony but almost all these have the ethernet port and I can use any WiFi Gaming Bridge or Media Bridge. I will supply one example.

There are others too, and one I own is over the powerline which is another option.
