Sony blu-ray bdp-n460 says tray is open or being read

Our sony blu-ray player (bdp-n460) intermittently (with more and more frequency) won't let me stream because it says the disc tray is open or is being read. This happens regardless of whether there is a disc in the machine or not and regardless of the different discs that have been in the machine. We can sometime get around this by unplugging it for several minutes. But that often doesn't work. Warranty already expired. What to do???
