Setting "External Device" in BIOS to boot Sony Vaio Laptop

I have a two-year old Sony Vaio VGN-495J laptop which I would like to be able to boot up with a USB drive.
This laptop runs Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit. The laptop uses the Aptio BIOS Setup utility (which I think is from American Megatrends, Inc) which allows me to set an "External Device" in the boot order. The BIOS setup utility will allow me to set this "External Device" to boot Before the "Internal Optical Disk Drive" - which is currently set as 1st Boot Priority.
My Question is This:
How do I define a USB drive as the "External Device" - keeping in mind that the BIOS only gives me the following options for "Boot Priority" drives:
(1) "Internal Optical Disk Drive",
(2) "Internal Hard Disk Drive",
(3) "External Device",
- AND FINALLY -
To Clarify: will Windows recognize an attached USB drive (one which is indeed windows-bootable) as that "External Device"? Or do I need to try and find a BIOS update (I haven't seen one on the SONY Vaio drivers download site) to provide this capability?
