Faint screen

I have an HP livestrong L2000 laptop. The screen is barley visible. I have tried to adjust the brightness with the funtion key and the key with the sun on it, I have also adjusted the display colors, contrast and so on, no luck. Second monitor through an s-video cable works. If I push the little screen close button the screen lights up for 5 seconds and goes back to dark. Please help I am not great with computers.

I try the generic reset noted in the CNET Laptop Troubleshooting forum sticky fix.

Then when the files I can't lose are fine I perform the restore to factory functions (see hp.com and instructions on their site).

If that fails, I go to HP.com, click on the chat button and see what they offer next.
