Does backup disks work in different sizes of hard drive

Does backup disks work in different sizes of hard drive other than which it comes from?

Model: HP Pillivion dv6000/1G RAM/120G hd/Vista Home Premium

I want to replace the 120G hd with a 320G or larger one but I am not sure if it will cause any problems during the time of system restore or afterward.

Usually it works.

But wouldn't it be better to just clone the 120 GB disk onto the new 320 GB disk? All programs and settings and data are included then. Much easier than a clean install, doing all your Windows updates again, installing all your applications, restoring all your data.

System Restore is a particular term used in Windows' OSes where any changes in the Operating System can be "rolled back" to some date/time before the changes were made. The significance of this is that the restore is carried out within the OS itself, that is, whilst Windows is up and running.

I think what you mean is a "Reinstall", or a "Repair Install", or a "Recovery". Sorry, these terms are confusing.

As Kees says, it should work as long as the new hard drive is the same size or larger than the old one.

Also, what you ask does depend on the method you used for back up. For example, Windows own back up utility still needs a working Windows OS to recover data from backup disks, but Cloning is a complete clone of one disk to another.

I mean that does the recovery disks, which come with the computer, or purchase from manufacturer or third party companies, or created from the recovery partition, work in different sizes of hard drive besides the original one without incurring any problems?

By the way, I mixed up the two terms: recovery and restore.

Recovery Media.

While it used to be that recovery media and systems were twitchy about size, newer systems do fairly well UNTIL you get in to those new 2+TB drives. It's best to test the restore and be ready to stick to something close in size.
