My HP laptop has a loud fan. How can I make it quieter?

What could the problem be? Do I need to oil it or replace the fan?

Tell more about your laptop please:
- what model?
- what CPU?
- what graphics?
- how old?
- did it always do it or only recently?
- when it is so loud, what is the CPU usage?
- when did you last do the yearly cleaning of the fans

The hotter the machine (i7 CPU, programs running, not cleaned) the louder the fan. That's OK. Otherwise the CPU would be damaged. Nothing in your current post tells it's TOO loud.

HP G61 Notebook Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU, T6600, 2.20Ghz RAM 4.00Gig, 64 Bit. Graphics at 3.7. Base score 3.7.

I am wondering if my lap-top is too hot or if there is something wrong?

The HP G61 is three years old.

Haven't cleaned it since I bought it three years ago.

Has only been loud recently.

Can you advise me?

Oh I just changed to Power Saver and the fan has become quieter. I guess that was it!

If you can't use the canned air then have it done for you. Laptops require this. I've yet to find one that lived long without the maintenance.

I third the vote for a cleaning since none was done in 3yrs.. It pays to clean the laptop. Further, the power saving setting it meant to help in cooling or throttle down if it gets too hot, so you may actually in short term helping but maybe doing the opposite if it needs cooling NOW because it is dirty. Heat will kill your laptop, so clean out the dust bunnies. Clean and un-do your power saving setting and see if that cleaning alone helps. If not, then return to power saving setting that quieted the laptop. Do a good and through cleaning.
