Can't boot from CD - Hp mini 311

Hello, I have an HP mini 311-1000CA with an external CD/DVD reader (or whatever it's called) , I put the windows 7 installation CD into it.

Then, I restarted my computer, pressed F10 and had access to BIOS (As I remember the BIOS version is F3 , not sure anyway, but it's the one that came with the computer)

Under advanced, I changed the boot order, put the CD/DVD as first (also there is no exclamation mark that tells that this option is not able to boot)

But after millions of tries, the computer still boots from the Hard disk..
There is no key that tells to boot to CD.

Please help me on this issue.
Note: I may not answer most of questions you ask, because I don't know how to do with those stuff, my friend helped me, plus the CD drive is not with me so far. So please post any answer that might help.

There has never been a Windows 7 install CD.

All are DVDs and do require all the drives and more to support boot from DVD.

Not all drives can do this.

Try a Windows 7 DVD and not a copy or make a copy of your DVD from Microsoft but let's stop here.

Most folk can't install Windows at all. Tell the full story please.

Ummm do you know anything about this issue on HP MINI 311 itself?
I don't know what to tell ... My 1st post tells the story, if you want any specific detail ask me , I'll answer if I can.

Do you think that copying the CD to a USB flash drive will help?

Sorry for the 3rd post.

I can tell you that when I enter my computer in windows XP , it shows me a DVD and a CD drive (F:) and (G:) ... But in a netbook there is no CD or DVD drives!
And when I connect the external CD/DVD drive it shows a 3rd one.

It's strange that F: and G: are shown as a DVD and CD, if these aren't present. That leads to 2 questions:
1. Is some virtual disk software installed?
2. Are they shown in the BIOS setup?

There is that virtual disk software that looks like a sheep on its icon and it can enter iso files ...

How can I know that they are shown in the BIOS?
Ps: I am a noob in navigating to the BIOS so please make it easy .

The virtual disk is only shown in XP, not in the BIOS. So that's totally unrelated. Not need to do anything about it.

In your first post, you said you already were in the BIOS-setup to set the boot sequence. So I didn't tell again. And, given your answer, it's not necessary anyway.

So now your only problem is: the netbook doesn't boot from your Windows 7 DVD if the BIOS is set to boot from an external drive and that DVD is in the drive.

Things to check:
1. Is the DVD bootable (try in another PC)?
2. Does the drive read other DVD's in Windows (try with another DVD)? For an external drive on a netbook you might need to use an Y-cable and the power adapater (not on battery!) or a powered USB-hub.
3. Is the BIOS really set to boot from that drive first?

If the answers are yes, yes, yes, it's time to call HP tech support.

1. The DVD is 100% bootable.
2. The drive read the windows DVD itself ( when I check it from the windows, not from the BIOS) .
The external CD/DVD drive needs to be plugged in two usb ports, and then it works.
Do I need to put my computer on AC power? But nothing was telling about that or an error with the power...

3. Well here's what's in the BIOS:

CD/DVD boot (Enabled)
Floppy boot (Disabled)
Internal network adapter (Disabled)

Boot order:
USB CD/DVD drive.
Notebook Hard Disk Drive.
USB diskettte on key USB
!USB floppy Drive.
!Network adapter.
--------------------------
Note: The external CD/DVD drive is not inserted.
Hope this will lead to a solution.

CD-ROM boot (enabled) -- Not CD/DVD.

In boot order:
USB diskette on key USB is USB diskette on key/USB Hard disk

So
1. The DVD is bootable
2. The drive is OK and works under Windows
3. The boot order is set to USB CD/DVD drive first

So all should be fine if you boot with that drive connected and the Windows DVD inside it. Connection to AC Power won't harm at all, and certainly is worth a try. I'm amazed you try to do it on battery power.

Check and verify

Reviewing the past posts, you should be doing the following and verify that:

1) run from AC power
2) use a DVD drive and bootable disc
3) in bios that the 1st is USB and if required that it is noted as DVD. It's NOT the same as booting from DVD, the bios is looking in the wrong place otherwise

I refer to step 3, if the ext. DVD drive is attached as ext. USB drive. I condensed it all because too much may have been taken for granted.
