Sound issues on my HP

A few days ago I was using my HP a6750t 64 bit desktop PC to play a game. When I booted up my computer I got an error message that said Windows Mediasmart Smartmenu has stopped working. SInce then I have had only very little sound and the little sound there is can only be heard when all my volume controls are turned all the way up. I did find an Update to Mediasmart that I ran but that did not fix the problem. I also tried updating my Realtek driver as well as trying alternate speaker devices and nothing I seem to do has worked.. Ive tried going in and making sure all my settings are correct but again no luck. Now a few days later I am no longer getting the error message regarding Mediasmart Smartmenu when i boot up but I also still have little to no soun from my headset. I am at a loss. please help.
