causes for lag between typing and text appearing on screen

I am experiencing lag probelms e.g. 5-6 seconds between key strokes and text appearing, or similar delay between clicking on URLs and the machine indicating that the web site is being sought. Using an HP laptop with Windows XP. Any ideas? Does not seem to be a virus.

We pulled our old Compaq R3000 from mothballs and with 512MB and XP it does indeed lag using newer browsers and some sites.

That's not unexpected but it was fun to try that old machine with more than a few sites open.

Not a bug. Just what happens on old low resource machines.

Reviving the typing lag issue?

I just got a new HP ProBook 4530s this summer, running Win 7, so "old low resource" isn't my issue. I experience severe typing lag infrequently, and shutting down the machine is always the cure. So this tells me that something in software is bogging things, but I have no idea what. I ran the Win 7 Resource Monitor during one of the "lag episodes" and nothing stands out.

I figure if I have a flaky memory module it would likely cause the problem far more frequently if not constantly - but maybe this is flawed thinking.

What do you think would be the best program to run in an attempt to capture the source of the problem?

If a new machine does not work proper then you have a warranty issue.
