COMPAQ Presario M2000 laptop won't boot

I have a COMPAQ Presario M2000 laptop (Win XP with latest updates), 5yrs old, working fine till recently). after switching on , hear two BEEPs & can see the black screen with COMPAQ logo, then 'Press F1 to resume and F10 to Enter SETUP" on top.
Nothing happens on pressing F1 or F10.
Have checked by reseting RAM, removing HDD, on battery only, on power only-but result
Is it a a major problem or a minor one? Would appreciate if someone can plz guide me as to what could be wrong and what else can be done by me at home.

Most beep codes tell you what component is causing the fault (by referring to a beep-code table), but unfortunately two beeps on a compaq laptop means "Unknown error".

As it's 5-years old, it might be the hard drive that's failed, and software exists that will tell you if it has.
Download the drive manufacturer's own diagnostic software from the appropriate link here:

You will need to download their DOS version of the software since windows won't start. The downlaod will be an ISO CD-image from which you make a bootable CD with IMGBurn from here: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Create the CD then boot your laptop from it and test the drive. If there is a choice between a "long" or "short" test, choose the former as it's more thorough. If the test says "failed" you will have to replace the drive.

Forgot to add (annoying that you can't edit posts on this forum!) that if the drive passes the test, my next candidate for testing would be the RAM which you can do with Memtest86. Again, it's an ISO CD-image file
from which you create a bootable CD with IMGBurn, then boot your laptop from it.

Run Memtest for at least 5 passes for reliable test results.
