Matt Newburg's Memory Stick & the spinning coloured ball

Hi .... help.
New to Mac from Vista, but getting there. I keep experiencing the spinning coloured ball - equivalent to MS "not responding" ? - and wondered if I was running out of space. I downloaded this recomended Memory Stick from Matt Newburg's page -
image Provides a graphical display of your RAM usage under Mac OS X. You can instantly see how full your RAM is getting. Optionally uses sound to signal pageouts and/or an increase in your swapfile count;"
There are no instructions and I have no idea what I am looking at. Originally there was an 8 flashing - got rid of a lot of audio books, now I have a 6. So it is getting better. Anyone know how it works? Keeps beeping at me . Pageouts? Swapfiles? Maybe too teckkie?
...... I just wanted to know how much free space I have - and really why that ball keeps spinning all of a sudden.
Anyone out there help? Thanks. yottiegirl
