Get that old backup disk and reconnect it to your Mac.

Once it mounts on the desktop you should be able to empty the trash.
By far the easiest way to move data from an old machine to a new one is to use the Migration Assistant.
When you first booted up that new machine, it asked you if you had any data to transfer from somewhere else, including another Mac.
Following the instructions from there would have transferred everything that would work, app, preferences, settings, mail, etc. to the new machine.
How did you transfer "that external HD to another"?
