have you tried the Force Quit option?
Hold down the Command + Option key and then press Esc.
If you are lucky, it will bring up a Force Quit dialog box where you can choose which program to Force Quit.
If that fails, then the only alternative is to do as suggested by macnerd10

It happened to me on one of the previous updates actually, not on the latest one. Nothing worked. This is why I suggested the hard restart. But if the poster can force-quit, this option is of course preferable.
