CD created by Windows not read on Mac

I am a new Mac user and trying to learn how to do an acceptable job. Previously a Windows only user, we now have a Mac environment with several Mac's on a network. We had a guest speaker for our group and he had brought a Powerpoint presentation on CD that he wished to use during the presentation. When the CD was placed in the Mac Mini drive, the info was not seen and the OS wanted to know what to do with the CD. Another Mac ( a notebook )displayed a similar message. The guest speaker was disappointed that we could not use the PowerPoint presentation. He stated further that it is the same CD used many other places with no problems (Windows based computers, I assume)
My question " Is this common and if so what can be done as a remedy?
If it is not common, what could have caused this? My guess is that Windows wrote the disc from the OS and possibly did not close the session, or if it was closed Mac cannot read that type of CD. Any solution for this other than have a Windows based system available to read a CD of this nature?
