SyncServer gobbling up memory causing system freeze/slow

I am using a MAC desktop using Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. The processor is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Every time I boot up the Sync Server starts automatically. I use this as a stand alone machine and I do not use it to sync to anything.

The Activity Monitor shows the following data: - PID 166, CPU 4.1 Thr 1, RSIZE 767.33 MB, VSIZE 3.07 GB.

As I do not sync to anything, or at least I have no knowledge of syncing to anything, is there any way I can stop SyncServer from starting up automatically?

I have to quit SyncServer via the Activity Monitor, but sometimes it restarts of its own volition. Any ideas why?

I just did a google search and it shows a variety of discussion about issues with SyncServer and some solutions. Perhaps one of them applies to your issue. Worth a look.

Entourage was my cause for SyncServer slowness

I had the same slowness on my MacBook Pro, with 10.5 and 2gb internal, running among other things Office 2008 for Mac. Activity Monitor would climb from tens of Megs to 1.5gb in a matter of 3 minutes after I force killed it. I don't use mobileMe, and sync only some iPods. Went to Genius Bar, and by process of elimination the helper tried turning off some lingering Entourage elements that appeared to be seeking to sync. I've never used Entourage, but it was the problem. The tech went to the Entourage menu item>>Account Settings>>Mail, then erased some mail actions that turned out to be trying to sync all the time. For good measure, we killed the welcome to Entourage email, the only thing in there. Now when I look in Account Settings/Mail box, nothing shows up. Problem solved for me.
