I have only had my iMac for 3 days and am totally green on Apple, though not on Windows. I have downloaded Skype, which works fine. However I am left with an icon on the Desktop, which I want removed/hidden. I have tried to move it to the Skype Application and even tried to put it into Trash but to no avail. The system seems to think that it is a device and will not let me move it. What can I do, please!

Disk image

You may be running Skype from a mounted disk image. It usually results from double-clicking a .dmg file. Think of it as a virtual drive. You'll find this a lot for Mac installs.

To properly install an application that doesn't have an installer and is on a disk image, you need to copy the application icon via drag-and-drop to your Applications folder. Use the icon at this location to drag it to your dock and not from the Disk Image.

Once you make sure you're not running the application from the Disk Image, you should be able to drag the mounted icon (not the .dmg file itself) to the trash to eject it. You'll not that the trash icon changes to an eject icon when doing so. You can also find the mounted version in your sidebar or you can right click on the open window if the Disk Image and select Eject "whatever it's called".

Once this is done the Disk Image should be removed and then you can do what you want with the .dmg file, either back it up or delete.
