I connected the drive directly to a 2.0 USB port. Unfortunately, Disk Utilities will not see the drive.

but that USB port is probably just an expansion port.
Manual for LaCie IP drives indicate that you connect the device to the network and run the installation CD/DVD that comes with it.
That will configure the drive for use on your Network.

The drive does show up as being on the network. I was told that for Apples Time Capsule to work, I had to reformat it with Disk Utility.

LaCie Tech Support is your next stop.
If the LaCie needs to be formatted, presumably as Mac OS X Extended(journaled) but is not visible in Disk Utility, LaCie should have the answer as to how you should format it.
