Monitor for photo work

I use a three-year-old Mac Mini and am about to pass it to my wife so I can get the latest model. I do a lot of work with photos so need a good monitor and a reliable calibration method. Price is the killer. Has to be below $1,000. Expert views suggest two models stand out for photographic work in this price range: the NEC MultiSync P221W 22" and the Samsung Syncmaster 245T. For calibration, it seems to be a toss-up between the Pantone Huey and a Colorvision Spyder2.
I would be interested in any advice users can offer me on this.
