Why are downloads repackaged "cnet_ (Then software name)..."

by edgbaston - 8/8/11 2:50 PM

Last week's, TechTracker's 'scan results' downloads appeared on my desktop with the product name and its specific or generic icon. Following a system restore these same downloads today, with one exception, have been renamed with a prefix of, "cnet_" accompanied by 'CNET green, with white chevron and smile, icons'. Why?

i have not been able to find an explanation for this change in appearance or any information on whether there is any unseen element to this change. May i please have an explanation? Why the change and why now, etc.?

All i found, (if it is pertinent to this issue, i'm not sure and i don't want to jump to the wrong conclusion), predates this change by three years one month: A Greg Penhaligon article: "Download Help Center" dated 4th July 2008 -

"Downloads that use the CNET Installer - CNET Download.com uses a small piece of proprietary software to facilitate the delivery of the files available on the site. This software is downloaded as an alternative to the full application installer, and allows CNET to apply an additional layer of security to the downloads we provide. The software creates a secure connection to the servers where we store the software. Not all software can be delivered by CNET in this manner, and in those cases the CNET Installer is disabled for the product. In addition to the speed and security the CNET Installer provides, we will also present offers for software that we think may be of interest to our users at the same time that we deliver your download. These offers are clearly disclosed during the installation process, and users are given the opportunity to accept or decline them. We only show offers for CNET Download.com approved software. The CNET Installer does not install itself on your system and does not leave behind any additional components. Any data we collect is in strict compliance with our privacy policy. Offers for 3rd-party software must comply with oursoftware policies. As always, CNET Download.com remains safe, trusted, and spyware-free.
