Creating a cool picture effect with iMovie

The issue is that I know it was created from one picture.

The picture is somehow separated into two layers (Background/Foreground).

I think the background is loaded into iMovie first (no movement added)

Then the foreground is loaded on top of the background and a Ken Burns is set.

I tried this with a different photo, but I can't create the effect from the Youtube clip. The background and foreground don't match up (Either the "foreground part" of the original is visible behind the second layer or there is some whitespace)

Any help or suggestions is much appreciated.

I didn't see anything special. Maybe a fade from one to the next but that's a very standard transition.

Sorry but the fade looks closer to the 17, 18 second mark.

Later at 29 seconds I see a SLIDE effect.

It's two images and the back image is sliding to give a pseudo illusion that the camera is moving along a horizontal line.

Nothing really new here. I don't want to upset you but these are done in post production using many systems that I can't guess if it was Sony Vegas, FCP HD or with/without add ons.
