Do you still have the restore disks that came with your Mac or even the iLife DVD that contains iMovie '08?

I have the two install discs that came with the unit but all the applications were preloaded.

Thanks for the nudge! A simple copy to external seems to work. Hopefully it will continue to do so after the upgrade. As a primarily pc user in process of crossing over, I find all these Apple products a revelation!

the Restore disks contain all the applications that were preloaded on the computer with the possible exception of things like iWork, Final Cut and other software that is not part of the OS X bundle that all Mac computers get.

Copying programs to another drive before upgrading

I had looked through my install disks to see there was a copy of the programs in questions but they aren't listed. Perhaps they're under a code name.
Anyway, I simply moved the programs to an external then upgraded to Snow Leopard and to iLife11. So far things are they way I wanted -- I am using the software but can still employ the old software save on the external. I'm also guessing I could have just moved the programs elsewhere on the hard drive and things would be okay.
So different from the politics of pc software!

The Restore disks probably do not list everything that is on them but if they are the disks that came with the computer, then the do contain all the bundled software that you were originally using.
That point is moot now as you have moved passed that point.
