iMovie won't "paste over at Playhead"

I am seeking to enliven a 30-minute interview video (+/- 8 gig in iMovie) by pasting in occasional jpgs or video clips. But iMovie won't "paste over at Playhead" any more. It used to do this flawlessly but I have been having hassles with the program in last month or so. Should I trash the preferences? Or ___?

Using iMovie HD v 6.0.3 on iMac (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running 10.6.1 (but was having probs with previous OS as well).
Oh! And, because of the large size of file, I do my editing on an external hard disk: a new 1 TB Glyph.

Ideas please!

iMovie 06 is a little long in the tooth for Snow Leopard.

Current version is 09.

Try trashing the preferences and see how you go.
