JPEG loss in Pages

by learning curve - 2/27/10 10:45 AM

I have been reading about content loss in JPEGs created by the save, save as, and resize commands, but I'm not sure I see this in Pages. Most of the people worried about this issue are using Photoshop. I took a 9.8 MB document (one page loaded with photos) and did a series of save as and resize steps. I saw little or no change in the size of the file. In fact a few times it got slightly larger. I want these documents to last and to be able to endure this kind of manipulation. Should I be converting my JPEGS to PSD files before using even though this makes them much larger? And why do they get larger when converted to PSD format? Finally, how significant are the changes recorded below? I can't see a change visually, but will it catch up with me in the future? Here are the numbers:
1) 9.8 MB, 10, 295,514 bytes
2) after save as, 9.8 MB, 10,295,478 bytes
3) after save as, 9.8 MB, 10,295,481 bytes----smaller
4) after save as, 9.8 MB, 10,295,481 bytes----same
5) after save as, 9.8 MB, 10,295,483 bytes----bigger
6) after resize and save as, 9.8 MB, 10,296,329 bytes----bigger
7) after save as, 9.8 MB, 10,296,318 bytes----smaller
--) after resize only, no change
8) after save as, 9.8 MB, 10,303,861 bytes----bigger
Thanks, K
