Consolidating iTunes on External Hard Drive

All my iTunes songs are on an external drive (80gB file). Many of the songs need to be updated to get the Artist and Song Titles correctly entered in the Library. I do not want to invest the time changing this info only to lose it. Will consolidating my iTune s protect me from this and can you consolidate to an external hard drive? Thanks!

then that is where your tracks will be Copied to when you consolidate.

I'm wondering what it is that you feel the need to be protected from.
