iTunes forum: iTunes Imports CD Different In Two Accounts

While I could be wrong, since each user can have different settings (not wrong about that) I find a few folk expect iTunes to work the same across users which is rare given how these settings can change and then we think about how user prefences in the OS could affect it as well.

Can you share why this is an issue? Or is it just an annoying area?

Its just annoying .... I like to keep things ordered.

Plus if I want to put all music for two users in one library. It makes finding things easier if they are grouped by album rather than being spread across multiple physical directories named by artist.

I use that old app CDEX and a CD lands where I tell it and iTunes is set to not move the files.

I can see you reasons for doing so

in iTunes there is a column marked Albums.
Clicking that sorts all the track into their various albums.

If you don't have a column marked Albums, you can add one by Right Clicking on the column headers and selecting Album.

Could that solve your problem?

If one user has the CDDB disabled, and the other does not, another reason for the accounts to vary in results.

I am more concerned by teh way the music is ordered on my Hard Disc than the way iTunes displays it.

These two things can be very different it seems. I want all my albums on the HD listed in folders by album.

On the whole iTunes does this. In my account anyway, in my wife's account it seems to put them in folder by artist, an therefore loads of them.

I have arrived a the following solution that seems to work for me ...

1) I have one Itunes library, and all music is imported into it from my account.
2) I let iTunes rip CDs as it feels fit. If they go on the HD as a complete album then fine, if not I then copy all the files elsewhere, and delete the folder from iTunes. I then reorder the data as I want it, then copy it back to the music folder the way I want it, then add the library to itunes again.
3) For my wifes's account I will simply add the files that in the common library to her iTunes media library (not a physical library). I have ntotried 3) yet, but should work I hope?

This process takes time .. but seems to work

And more. Now that you know this, you work this till you get it the way you like. Sorry but I don't use the menus enough to know where all the settings are.

As to the COMMON LIBRARY, sure. Do that. Just be sure to look for any setting that iTune has in regards to rearranging or moving files into the library.

each of whom have an machine account is straight forward.

At the root of the hard drive you will see the Users folder. Inside that are all the users Home folders.
There is also a folder called Shared.
If you move the iTunes library to that location, ALL users of the machine can access it.
Each user will still have a separate iTunes app but that app will access the library that is located in the Shared folder.

I think you can put the library on a different drive and share it, like c:\iTunesLibrary

just not in your login specific areas, because others won't be able to look at them.

Putting stuff on itunes takes HOURS of my life :0(
