New iTunes question

Here's my situation- I have an iPod that I was using with iTunes on my laptop (I'm *pretty* sure it was a version earlier than 10).
Then my laptop died. Months later, I fixed it with a new hd.
But now I've gotta start from scratch with iTunes.

I'm terrified that if/when I do it w. the latest version, I'll somehow just lose all my songs, etc. (I have it backed up)

Is there anything I should do as a precaution or just dive in with it?

To be honest, I know so very little about iTunes & how it tends to act. I'd only gotten it (& the iPod) right before my laptop died.

So I *guess* iRip would be an option. If that's the general consensus & if it's the easiest, hassle-free option, I'd say yes it is.

If, as you say, you have all your songs backed up,

then you have nothing to worry about.
Install iTune 10.x, import the songs from your backup,
configure the playlist you use for the iPod and connect the iPod.

Even if iTunes "eats" all your songs, which is highly unlikely, you still have the backup of them.
