Cannot manually access iPod on new machine

I have just set up iTunes on a new machine running Windows 7. I'm pretty sure I have the 64-bit version.
When I plug in my iPod, iTunes regognizes it and shows the contents, but everything is greyed out and I cannot delete songs.
I looked in iTunes help, but once I begin, the instructions given there refer to buttons that do not appear on my machine and the screen shots show a different set of buttons and options than appear for me.

Can anyone help?

Is that pause switch set to pause? (on the pod)

Found workaround/solution

I solved the problem myself, or at least found a workaround. It seems to work OK when I allowed the "Erase and Synch" that the new iTunes installation wanted.

I had been afraid to do the synching and lose what was on the iPod. I had to make a playlist of what was already on there, one song at a time, and was then able to transfer the playlist to the erased iPod. Seems a new installation requires you to start with a clean iPod.

I haven't located the instructions on the iPod help I was looking for yet, to check if things correspond now, but I do have access to manually manipulate the iPod.

My iPod is an original Shuffle, and as far as I know, the pause function resets every time you turn it on or off.

Instructions still different

The instructions in iTunes help don't correspond to what i see on my screen.
Under "Synch your iPod.../Synch your device/Synch Manually" it says to access the iPod from the iTunes screen. Then it says to click on the "Summary" button. On the screen shot there are eight buttons, none of which appear for me in iTunes. In iTunes there are "Settings" and "Contents" buttons.

However, after doing the first synching, I seem to have access as described lower down in the help.
