Cannot manually access iPod on new machine

I have just set up iTunes on a new machine running Windows 7. I'm pretty sure I have the 64-bit version.
When I plug in my iPod, iTunes regognizes it and shows the contents, but everything is greyed out and I cannot delete songs.
I looked in iTunes help, but once I begin, the instructions given there refer to buttons that do not appear on my machine and the screen shots show a different set of buttons and options than appear for me.
Can anyone help?
