Songs Disappear/Doesn't Recognize Ipod Songs

I have 2 basic problems:
1. I have playlists that USED TO have songs in them. The songs are all gone. When I double click on the playlists, they are empty. What happened?
2. When I connect my Ipod to my computer, Itunes appears to recognize it, but it won't show what songs are on the Ipod. Further, because it does not recognize any songs on my Ipod, I cannot delete them to add new songs. Thanks for the help.
