Importing into iTunes -- copy files to iTunes Media folder?

When importing songs into iTunes, the software by default is set to copy the music files to the iTunes media folder and convert them to .m4a format. This, of course, results in having two copies of each song after the import is done. Before I disable this option I'd like to know what you think are the pros and cons of having this option enabled/disabled.

Once iTunes has imported your tracks into the iTunes Database, not physically into the media folder, you can remove the original from the computer.
When you say Two Copies, I'm hoping you mean on your computer and not in the iTunes library when you view it in iTunes.

Pros are that iTunes will not lose track of where you music is and it is essential to consolidate the library before you transfer the whole thing to another machine. Seems you are already consolidating.

Correct, two copies on my computer

There is no duplication in the iTunes database. I have the .m4a files in the iTunes folder and the original .aiff and .mp3 files in the Music folder. Thanks for letting me know it's safe to delete those once they've been imported into iTunes.

just to prove the theory, just move a bunch of those files onto the desktop.
If iTunes cannot find them, then they have not been moved into the iTunes database.
If iTunes can still play the track, put them in the trash.
Check again and when you are positive that iTunes can still play them, delete the trash.
