LG Blu-ray player zooms in on 4:3 DVDs

I have a couple of years old LG Blu-ray player and it does a very annoying thing: regardless of settings in the player, it zooms in on old 4:3 aspect ratio movies, showing them on TV at 16:9 aspect ratio and chopping the top and bottom of the image off. It only does it on some movies, but it's really annoying. It's not the TV's fault either, because if I watch the same movie from my laptop plugged to the tv, the problem doesn't appear. So the Blu-ray player is to blame.

Does anyone else have the same problem? Is there a fix?

I mean no, that I have yet to find any one solution other than diving into the menus and seeing if there are settings we can change. The complaint shows up a lot but what's unclear is if the owner can find and change settings.

If the product is indeed defective, return it for one that works.
