I've read that Samsung will be offering a "Evolution Kit" for their compatible Smart TV models so that people will be able to upgrade software/hardware into the future to keep their televisions up-to-date and able to take advantage of new services, tech etc as they become available.

I am wondering if LG has plans to provide similar functionality to their Smart TVs?

It makes a lot of sense because technology and the means to utilise it is constantly changing and last year's television quickly becomes a dinosaur when it hasn't got the power or functionality to take advantage of this (or next) year's Smart TV services.

Buying an "upgrade kit" every year or so makes a lot more sense than buying a new television just to have the latest goodies.

I know that some folk want the development of the HDTV to continue after they pay for the set but since there is no recurring revenue and programmers don't work for free the HDTV development is stopped after it ships. This can royally upset those that are used to a Windows PC.

If I can see a revenue source from upgradeable hardware in televisions then I'm certain I am not alone. A $100-$200 upgrade "chip" might not bring in as much money as someone buying a new TV but at least it will keep my customers spending money with me... even if it only for a year or two - it is all about money and we don't want our customers buying the competition's latest model TV because ours can't keep up. wink
