Mac laptops forum: Upgrade Macbook Pro with SSD

I understand that SATA 3 is backwards compatible with SATA 2. It is just not worth the money sometimes to purchase a SATA 3 drive to use in a computer with SATA 2. Sorry if I did not make this clear in my first post

Anyway what else do I have to consider in relation to SSD compatability with this mac?
When I look in shops, most manufactures don't say whether it is compatible with a particular laptop. So How do I know I am buying one that will work?

Maybe it's where I am. I'm guessing you are not in the USA?

You don't buy unless they back you up and accept returns. Also the maker should answer this one.

You say contact the maker. THe issue is Apple is interested in selling SSDs from their own retail store, so it is difficult to get this type of info from them.

However my guess is that any SSD should work in general?

You find some Apples and some SSDs don't play well together. Here it is pretty easy to hit the maker's site and see if there are application notes and to check forums for issues with a drive. The most common old issue was when the laptop would come out of sleep. We hope all makers fixed that but unless the Apple laptops are noted as compatible then you know to ask what the return policy is.

Crucial.com ones. They answer questions, provide updates and have slower/faster models to meet the budget.

At least they have all their info and specification on their site.
I was thinking of looking at Intel and Kingston SSDs however their website lacks information in relation to max compatibility. That was the main problem

3 year warranty and free tech support is hard to argue with. Try their chat to see if they know of any issue with your model. Again the most common issue I see is coming out of sleep. I can't guess why.

I chatted to them. They said there is a known issue where their SSDS function at a lower than expected performance with a macbook pro. The problem occurs because the SSDs work at SATA 1 performance (reduced).

So I guess Kingston may not be the way to go in this case.

By the way Intel notifies me to contact Apple for this type of info, hence the concern.

They didn't hide the fact or issue. And you discovered first hand why we have to ask. I only know a few machines and the issues I've bumped into. Not enough to nail what you could run into but a few areas.
