strange enigma MacBookPro and Apple Cinema Display

Is there a Mac genius out there! Can you solve the following mystery re my 20" Apple cinema display and MacBook Pro.
After about 3 years of flawless use of the display connected to the MBP via the DVI display port, I switched on the set up one morning to find that the computer no longer recognised the display.
Tried everything - but 'detect displays' couldn't find the display, and under computer info via the apple menu display, status shows 'no display connected'.
Convinced it was a display problem I lugged the ACD to local Apple genius bar, but when connected to the latest MBP via a mini port adapter, and the display worked fine.
Now convinced that the problem was with the DVI port on the MBP (there were no other indications at all of any logic board problems, and TechToolPro confirmed this), so took the MBP to the same genius bar and yes, you guessed it - the first display they plugged in to the DVI port worked perfectly, and was recognised by 'detect displays' on the MBP.
So has anyone the remotest idea what could be going on? What could have caused the sudden incompatibility between the ACD and the MBPro which can't be replicated with other computers and displays? And why would it suddenly happen one night between switch off and switch on, after years of no problems?
So, before lugging both machines to the Apple genius bar, in the hope that these forums hold a far broader and deeper depth of experience than Apple's albeit very eager lads, please... is there a genius in the house!?
All suggestions welcomed....Blaina71
