Any chance this machine has any sort of warranty left on it?

I'd probably go with heat related but short of taking it apart and making sure that everything is rotating as it should and that none of the vents were blocked, I couldn't even make a suggestion as to the cause or cure.

If there is any warranty left, perhaps the extended AppleCare one, now would be a good time to call Apple.

Did it ever do this before any warranty period ended, if it has?

I no longer have any type of warranty. When I first bought it it did it a few times and never did it after that until a few months ago. No you can't use it. I've talked to Apple several times but no solution.

My thought is heat related. I can usually add credence to that by asking the owner how long it was since they used canned air on the vents. If they respond with "what is canned air?" then the likelihood it's some vent/clogged heatsink issue went up.
