Keyboard not working with a USB extension cable

I have the newest 27" iMac. I love the machine but I am having a problem getting the keyboard connected using a 6 foot USB extension cable. This cable worked with my 24" iMac just fine, but the keyboard will not connect to my computer with the extension cable. The keyboard works without it, but not with it. I have tried one of the other USB ports on the iMac with no joy. I bought a new extension cable and that one does not work either. Ideas?

Try another keyboard? And re-test those cables on other machines.

This is a brand new keyboard to go with the brand new 27" iMac. YES the keyboard does work (I am typing this with it hooked directly into the iMac. The cables worked with my 24" iMac last Saturday. They have worked for the last 2.5 years.

At 2.5 years the cable could be USB 1.x and not USB 2.0. I fear some consumers are loathe to do such tests and only want a fix. If so, then back to Apple and get them to fix it.

Keyboard part II

Bob, I can't tell if they are USB 1.0 or USB 2.0. I got them at Staples here in town. They both are identical, but one is 2 years newer. The package does not specify which it is, so I am thinking USB 1.0. Can I test to find out if it is USB 1.0 or USB 2.0?

It could be the computer and a test of this cable and keyboard on another same model is required. With all the stuff from you know what country I've lost count of the bad or barely good enough cable issues I've encountered.

That's not saying it's that but there is more testing needed.

Got it working

Thanks Bob! I took the new keyboard AND the extension cable and plugged them into my old iMac and they do not work. I now have the old keyboard and extension cable plugged into the new iMac and they work fine. I have ordered a USB 3.0 extension cable and will try it when it comes. I can take it to an APPLE store, an hour away, if it does not work with the new USB 3.0 Cable.

The iMac is 3.0 so that is what I ordered. I can get 2.0 also.

I got the USB 3.0 cable and hooked up to my keyboard. That seems to have cured my problem. It works great now. Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

I have the same problem with the keyboard on my new iMac. The USB 2.0 extension cable that I purchased does not work. Which USB 3.0 cable did you purchase?
